The pioneer of West Cornwall Golf Club was rather strangely perhaps, as a cleric, the Rev. R.F. Tyacke. Where he had learned to play golf or become interested in it is not known. However, the Rev. Tyacke foresaw there was a certain pedigree in the natural land at Lelant and gathering together a number of enthusiasts he quickly had a nine hole golf course constructed.

It was this which attracted Dr. Penrose Williams, an amateur archaeologist, to a buy a holiday cottage in Constantine Bay in the early 1900’s. He had heard about the presence of a Holy Well buried in the area and after extensive excavations he found it in 1911.
