Over one hundred years ago, a small band of enthusiasts approached the local landowner, the Duke of Bedford, for permission to set out a 'link' of holes on Whitchurch Down. Permission was received and an inaugural meeting held in November 1890, with play commencing in early 1891.

Royal North Devon at Westward Ho! can rightly claim to be the cradle of English Golf. Founded in 1864, it is the oldest golf course in the country and is regarded as the St Andrews of England. Okehampton golf course is a typical moorland course situated on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon. This lovely 18 hole course is not long at only 5273 yards for the mens and 4817 yards for the ladies tees.

The greens are well maintained and can be very quick during the summer months leaving even the experienced putters struggling to get down in two on some holes

Although the present Golf Club dates from 1931 the origins can be traced back to 1894 when Major Harold St Maur created a 9- hole course on his own estate, which was interwoven with the Stover pheasant shoot. The present trolley shed was the pheasant-rearing shed! In 1931 work commenced on constructing a James Braid designed golf course at the present location.

Constructed on downland, the fairways are undulating and although hole 3 does have a short sharp hill, all others are easy walking. Four holes are played within Ashley Woods, ancient woodland carpeted with bluebells in May. Being natural chalk downland, the course drains very quickly and remains playable in all but the most extreme weather. The course is rarely closed for long, and trolleys have only been banned for four days during the last ten years.

Situated just ten miles north of Plymouth, on Roborough Down within the Dartmoor National Park; the course has extensive views across the moors and across the Tamar Valley to Cornwall.
